london food markets

The food market scene has exploded in London over the last few years. Markets filled with street food stalls have popped up all over the capital city, some opening as recently as this month. These aren’t your standard farmer’s markets – these are established, trendy markets that offer an incredible range of fast-casual fare. In my guide to the best London food markets, I’ll tell you about my favorites and note the must-visit stalls at each for the best street food in London!

Dinerama

Dinerama is one of my all-time favorite London food markets! Located in East London on Great Eastern Street, this market is open Wednesday through Saturday from 5 PM to midnight. This market has a nightlife vibe, with plenty of food stalls and several bars- it’s the perfect place to start a night out. Food-wise, it’s hard to go wrong, but there a few stalls that I always hit up here. I love the “chipuffalo” spicy chicken wings from Thunderbird, served with truffle blue cheese sauce. For dessert, check out Chin Chin Lab for delicious and interesting sweet treats.

Borough Market

Borough Market is one of London’s most famous (and largest) markets, and once you visit, you’ll see why. Compared to Dinerama, Borough Market is more of a traditional market- it has stalls where you can buy produce and cheese (and more), but it also has some of the best street food in London! I can’t resist the fresh pastries and doughnuts from Bread Ahead Bakery, and my friends love the Ethiopian stall! I also really love trying all the British cheeses on offer from the different local creameries! If you’re in the mood for Mexican food, check out El Pastor- an incredible restaurant located right next to the market! Borough Market is located near London Bridge Station in Southwark, and it’s open Monday-Saturday (from 10 AM to 5 or 6 PM on weekdays and from 8 AM to 5 PM on Saturdays).

Camden Market

Camden Market was the first London food market I ever visited, so it has a fond place in my market-loving heart! This market is located near the Camden Town tube stop in North London, and it’s open every day from 10 AM til late. Start your day at Yolk Breaker for an amazing egg sandwich, or eat your way through the food section of the market for lunch or dinner. Vegans (or people looking to try something without animal products) will love Rudy’s Dirty Vegan Diner. This market also has a Chin Chin Lab location, which is totally worth checking out for its super-rich liquid nitrogen ice cream. There’s also an indoor market here with vendors selling knick-knacks and souvenirs.

Box Park

Down the road from Dinerama, you’ll find Box Park, a market made of shipping containers. This market is open every day from 11 AM to 10:30/11 PM, and it opens early at 8 AM on Sunday. I’m still dreaming about the fried chicken sandwich at Coqfighter Chicken and Beer- it’s that good. With several bars and an outdoor patio area, Box Park is the perfect place to go for a drink on a sunny weekend afternoon!

Old Spitalfields Market

Old Spitalfields Market, located in Spitalfields on the edge of The City and Shoreditch, is another one of my favorite London food markets. This market is open every day, but the hours vary, so check the website to make sure it’s open when you want to go! There are so many incredible options at this market, making it home to some of the best street food in London. I used to live a block away, so I’ve spent plenty of time trying the different stalls. I love the buns from Yum Bun, the bubble tea at Yi Fang, the bowls from Rice Brother, and the Reuben sandwich from Monty’s Deli. For a healthier option, I love Ahi Poke. The Taiwanese wheelcakes from Wheelcake Island are a lovely, sweet way to finish off your market feast. There are also several full-serviec restaurants around the perimeter of the market.

Mercato Metropolitano

I haven’t had the chance to visit these last two markets, but I’ve heard amazing things about them, so I wanted to include them on this list of London food markets! Mercato Metropolitano is located in Elephant and Castle in South London, and it’s open every day, starting at 8 AM on weekdays and 11 AM on weekends. The pizzas from Fresco London will be the first thing I try when I visit! Additional locations of Mercato Metropolitano will be opening up soon, according to the website.

Seven Dials Market

Seven Dials Market is a newcomer to the London market scene, but it is already making waves. The market opened in the Seven Dials neighborhood (near Covent Garden) in September. It is open every day from 11 AM to 11 PM (except Sundays, when it’s open from 12 PM to 10:30 PM). Some London market staples that I’ve already mentioned have locations here, including Yum Bun, Monty’s Deli, and Ink (which has incredible calamari). I’m most excited about Pick and Cheese, a cheese restaurant with a conveyor belt of different cheeses constantly revolving!

Elizabeth Everywhere’s Favorite London Food Markets

Whether you’re looking for Asian buns or a pastrami sandwich, these London food markets have exactly what you want. I love the nightlife vibe at Dinerama, but I love the wide selection of options available at Camden Market. For the best street food in London, I would head to Old Spitalfields Market or Borough Market. Each of these markets is well worth a visit, and I can’t wait to try some of the newer markets, like Seven Dials Market, on my next trip back to London!
